Kunterbunt
“An image is a stop the mind makes between uncertainties.”
Djuna Barnes, Nightwood, 1937
Kunterbunt is an ongoing narrative by the artist Hannah Murgatroyd, its current form being published online as it occurs, in the occasional tradition of the serialized novel.
Kunterbunt evolves as a painting might, without sight of a beginning, middle or end: a something occurring in the movement toward something else. The text depends upon the harmony found through the disruption of language, incongruous photographic images, a nonlinear sensibility and the inclusion of words of the world – meaning words lifted direct from the world – from signs, conversations, chanson songs, search engine searches and bad translations.
There are people in Kunterbunt, things happen in it and a desire to narrate the occurrences of being prevails. Yet the narrative’s purpose remains the process of uncovering its own order and leanings, rather than these decisions being made in advance of its existence.
